Peacefully at Hilltop Manor, Merrickville on June 2, 2021 at the age of 96 with her family by her side. Predeceased by her dearly beloved first husband, Elmer Girling and her second husband, Colonel Charles Read. Left to mourn are her cherished daughters Leslie and Stacey and her two special sons-in-law (both David). Beloved grandma to Meredith (Shawn), Emma, Daryl (Kira), step-grandma to Hannah and Sarah and GG to Caellum, Jaiden and Fred. Also survived by several nieces and nephews, especially Kerry (Betty). She is also survived by dear friends Ruby, Shirley, Bev, Lois, and Betty.
In her golden years Jessie enjoyed hosting her lady friends for Tuesday crochet at her Merrickville home. For a few years she was actively involved in political work at the local, provincial, and federal levels. She was quite active with Holy Trinity Church in Merrickville, serving over many years in several capacities including pastoral care (visiting friends and community members in nursing homes and hospitals) and as a Lay Reader. She had a quick wit, loved to tell jokes, and play games with family.
The family wishes to express their thanks for the loving care staff provided during her 8 years residence at Van Horne Manor and later Hilltop Manor.
Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, a scheduled visitation for friends will take place on Saturday, June 5 2021 from 1 PM - 3 PM. Please call the funeral home at 613-283-7225 to book your visitation time. A private family service will take place with interment at Hillcrest Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, “in Memoriam” donations to CHEO would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Lannin Funeral Home, Smiths Falls.
