For almost half a century, Jim was a dear and treasured friend to both of us and to our sons, Graham and Andrew.
By some mysterious process, we and the Wellers – Jim, Joan and their three children – always lived in the same neighbourhood even as both families moved around. In 1972 when we bought our first home in Toronto, the hospitable Wellers down the street made us feel welcome. Suzette walked Alex and Graham to school on their first day of kindergarten, accompanied by Alex’s big sister Caitlin. When they moved to the Glebe in Ottawa, we turned up there a short time later. Jim and Joan threw big family Christmas parties that we never missed. And after they moved out to their lovely riverside home that Jim designed in Merrickville, we built our house in Perth – close enough that we could comfortably visit back and forth for brunch, lunch or parties.
Among the many affinities we felt with Jim and Joan were being parents of wonderful kids and sharing passions for art, books and food. As painters, Jim and Suzette admired and encouraged one another’s work. Jim hosted Suzette as guest artist on the MAG studio tour when she was just emerging as an artist in the area. Joan, a dedicated librarian and children’s literature scholar, exchanged literary enthusiasms with Roy. And when Roy took the leap of becoming a fulltime writer and consultant, it was Jim who provided wise counsel from his depth of professional experience.
Jim was a rare being: a gentleman with a sunny, humorous worldview, a warm heart and tremendous generosity of spirit. The world was fortunate to have him. We will miss him hugely. To Sam, Caitlin, Alex and Jim’s devoted friend Charleen and their families, our family sends sympathies and love.

Jim was a valued member of the Merrickville Artists' Guild (MAG) and deeply respected by his fellow artists. He helped steer the Guild through some difficult times and his steady, calm approach was an inspiration to MAG members. Joelle and I love his art and are proud to have several of his lovely paintings on our walls. Jim was always willing to talk about his art and share his insights as an artist. He will be deeply missed - our sincere condolences to his family.

I had an affectionate reverence for Jim for the more than 50 years he was a friend and colleague. I’m profoundly grateful for everything I learned from him and the way he helped me shape a life for myself.
Jim was the driving force behind the ARA Consulting Group that gave me and so many others a rich, diverse and supportive environment for pursuing our livelihoods. It was Jim’s energy, creativity and sensibility that shaped what we became over a quarter century of trying to make the world a slightly better place. Whether it was developing a strategy for on-reserve housing across Canada or building a training institute in Nigeria, Jim’s vision and optimism kept us all going.
And of course, most importantly, in 1973 Jim introduced me to Martha who I’ve been with ever since.

Our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Jim. Sue and I were blessed to have Jim as a friend during our life in Merrickville. Fondest memory? There cannot be just one. Whether it was listening to Jim's stories at a dinner party, watching Superbowl games with him (how many chicken wings did he really eat during that first gala?) or sharing my first, and only, trip into Algonquin Park, Jim left an indelible impression upon us on how to live a dignified, purposeful life.
Not to be forgotten.
