Weedmark, Dorothy Elizabeth "Betty" 1938 - 2023 It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dorothy Elizabeth (Betty) Weedmark (nee Brunshaw), age 85 years, peacefully with family by her side at the Pembroke Regional Hospital on Sunday, December 10, 2023. Daughter of the late John Brunshaw, Ursula Brunshaw (Fagan) & Bessie Smith (Haskin). Betty Weedmark of Merrickville, Ontario, beloved wife of the late Frederick Weedmark. Loving mother of Deborah Weedmark, Jo Anne Cunningham (late Donald), & Michael Weedmark. Cherished Nanny of Sean Cunningham, Jordan Weedmark (Ethan), & Eric Cunningham (Amber). Cherished Great Grandmother of Noah-Anne Cunningham & Kenna Gilchrist. Loving sister of Dianne Doucette & sister of Lawrence Brunshaw. Predeceased by sisters Joan Nicholson (late Ernie) & Joyce Demik (late Stan). Fondly remembered by nieces & nephews. Betty & Fred were owner/operators of Weedmark’s Esso for 30 years. Betty had an extensive career in municipal politics. Beginning in 1980 as a councillor. She was a trailblazer for women in politics. Becoming the first female elected Reeve for Merrickville and the first female elected Mayor for Merrickville-Wolford. In 1989, Betty was the first lady Warden to be elected in the United Counties of Leeds & Grenville. Retiring from politics in 2000. Respecting Betty’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Holy Trinity Anglican Church Merrickville or the Charity of choice would be gratefully acknowledge by the family.
