Obituary
Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Her family in Poland and Canada regret to announce the death of Barbara Wojtowicz (nie Knoll) on 22 October 2009. Born in Lvov on 28 March 1918, Basia was a consummate equestrian, decorated member of the underground Resistance Army (AK) during the 2nd WW, and a veteran of the Warsaw Uprising. She gained notoriety as the first female taxi driver and through her involvement in automobile rallies in post war Poland. After receiving a doctorate in food technology at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, she emigrated to Canada and worked as a research scientist for the National Research Council and Department of Fisheries. Upon retirement, she impressed her grandchildren and friends with her deep love for animals and plants, running a lively menagerie at the farm outside of Merrickville. She loved her adopted country. We will miss her tremendously.
