I was very fortunate to have been able to spend the past 12 years getting to know Joan, she was a woman of extreme strength, courage and concern for everyone. I will miss the hours and hours of playing Kanasta! The fondest memories I have of her is sitting either on the deck or in the water with her lawn chair at our cottage on Manitoulin Island..she so loved being by the water. Ed and I and Milo will cherish every memory that we made together. Love you always and forever, may God be with you.

I am a close friend of Howard in Vancouver and got to know Joan over the last 8 years when she came to visit Howard each year. I also had the pleasure to visit Merrickville in 2011 to spend some more time with Joan and get to know the area. I have known Howard for more than 30 years and it was great to visit the town where he grew up. Over the years I have always had great respect for Howard who was always been ready at a moment's notice to return to Merrickville to assist his mother when needed. Joan was blessed to have such a dedicated son to take care of her along with many close friends over the last 10 months. I will miss her humour and great spirits even when facing very difficult health challenges. She will be greatly missed.

I have so many amazing and fun memories of times with Aunt Joan (snowmobiling of course, and Graham Lake, just to name two), and I know I'm not alone. It's a wonderful thing that there are many, many people who will always think of her fondly and love her. Howard and Ed, you know I share in your sorrow, and I am thinking of you both. Much love xo.

The Carleys were my anchor to Merrickville and Joan the last link. Clare and Ethel, Bill and Joan, Margaret, they WERE Merrickville to me and our family growing up. Our deepest sympathies at the end of Joan's courageous fight.
