I worked out of Toronto from 2004-2010 and often handed the Expressway train over to Doug at Smiths Falls..or took one off of him for the trip home. Doug was a real gentleman in every sense of the word. My condolences to his family.

My condolences to the Crate family . Doug was a well respected railroader and brought a sense of calm to a job that was at times hectic. Doug had a great sense of humor and was a joy to be around. His suffering is over, and he is in a better place. Harry Beckett.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Doug's passing. He was one of my great friends and good helper when we worked for the Employee and Family Assistance Program at Smiths Falls. Always willing to lend a helping hand and be a great friend and support to me. His life was surely cut too short but hopefully his pain and suffering were not too long and he was surrounded by the loving thoughts of family and friends wishing him peace and joy. I'll miss you Doug and thank you for being and influential part of my life. My life is richer today because of your presence.

Doug is the second youngest of our Grandmother and Grandfather Crate's 21 grandchildren. As one of the youngest, Doug's death is painfully out of order. Being one of his older cousins, I was a teenager while Doug was still very young. My memories are of 4 little boys tearing through the house and having a generally great time together. We are so sorry that Juanita and the children did not get more years with him.

My deepest heartfelt sympathies to the entire Crate family at this difficult time. Doug was a great friend. A fun loving person and dedicated to his family. In the seventies Doug, Dan Malone, Ted Mosher and I were a team like brothers sharing life's experiences together. Doug and I headed West to find work and ended up in Winnipeg for about 4 months before we ended up taking the train back to Smiths Falls. That's when Doug met and introduced us to Juanita Bain. Doug struck GOLD! We all knew it. They married and had three beautiful children. Beautiful grandchildren came next, whom they loved and cherished. 'Dogger', you have now departed to a resting place that is painless. You fought hard to spend as much time as you could with your loved ones before having to let go. Rest in peace my good friend! I pray God's peace and compassion on your family who are now dealing with the loss, especially at this time of year. You will be 'sorely' missed, but never forgotten by not only your family, but by the people whose lives you have come into and walked beside over these 60 years. Miss you friend!!!!
