Professor Emeritus November 15, 1929 - August 7, 2014 Peter Sutterlin, 84, passed away softly at the Hilltop Manor Nursing Home in Merrickville, Ontario. Peter leaves his wife of 60 years, Ann (Woodley) Sutterlin; his daughter Linda Sutterlin-Duguid (Terry); his son Paul Sutterlin (Lorrie); grandchildren Molly, Nora, Holly and Phillip; his twin sister Inge Kolberg and his brother Walter Sutterlin; extended family and many close friends. Born in Hamburg, Germany to Helen and Walter Sutterlin, Peter was raised in Galt (Cambridge), Ontario. He obtained his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, then began his career as a geologist in Calgary. Peter's talent for research and teaching led him to the University of Western Ontario and later to Wichita State University where he taught for 16 years and became Director of General Education. Anyone who spent time with Peter knows how important music was to him throughout his life. He was an appreciative listener and enthusiastic bass singer with many vocal groups, performing everything from classical to barbershop, and everywhere from local nursing homes to Carnegie Hall. After retirement, Peter shared his leadership abilities with his community through active participation in the Heritage Merrickville Foundation and the Merrickville District Community Health Centre. Peter will be best remembered as a devoted husband, father, opa, brother, mentor and friend. His family wishes to thank the staff of Hilltop Manor for their compassionate care, and to express their heartfelt gratitude to all the special friends who graciously offered help and support in so many ways throughout Peter's illness. To honour Peter's wishes, cremation has taken place and a family memorial service will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
