When I was growing up, I remember two objects in my mom’s kitchen. One was a plaque and the other was a little laminated card – both inscribed with prayers. Mom had a strong faith – it comforted her, guided her, gave her strength to deal with the tough breaks that life threw at her. I think these prayers meant a lot to her.
The first was the 23rd psalm. For her, the Lord was her shepherd and she did not want. He restored her soul and led her down the path of doing right, despite walking through the valley of the shadow of death. Despite so many struggles and battles, so much hardship, he comforted her. Her cup overflowed. Goodness and mercy followed her through all the days of her life. And now she dwells in the house of the Lord forever.
The other prayer was about change – about adversity. And I think it helped her stay strong, stay true to herself even when life was not easy.
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change
The courage to change the things I can
And the Wisdom to know the difference”
Mom certainly would speak up for what she believed in and would fight for it – particularly when it came to her kids, her family. But some change, some adversity is inescapable. Being a young widow and mother of four was tough, but my mom endured.
It was important to her to be a good mother and to provide for her children. Through all the adversity and struggles, there was never a doubt – not even for a minute – that we, her children, were loved unconditionally every moment of her waking life. In this most important way, she provided for us in abundance. And really, that’s all it took.

Sincere Condolences to the Whiten family.
We were saddened to hear of your Mother's passing and our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief.
My memories of your Mom and family go back to when we were neighbours on Kent St. and I spent time babysitting for your Mom and Dad. Your Mom worked many hours of shift work at Bell Canada and it was not easy raising a family. She did her best and was always a pleasant person.
Many many years later, my Mom was diagnosed with Alzeheimers Disease and spent tree years at Broadview Nursing Home. It was at that time I met up with Lorraine again and chatted with Jim and his wife. I was most appreciative of the support provided by Jim and family close to the days prior to the death of my Mom. They offered Tim Horton snacks and a place to rest close to the home. I will always remember your kindness. Thank you for being so kind.
Marilyn (Palmer) St. Louis .
