We are so sorry to hear of Paul’s passing. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to meet and know him as a friend and colleague.
I had the pleasure to serve as the CAO of Rideau Lakes when Paul was a member of Council. I greatly enjoyed my relationship with Paul since it became much more that a typical one since he became a close personal friend.
We send our condolences to Paul’s family and hope that any sadness can be offset by the many memories of good times with him as a father and grandfather. He was one in a million and I will never forget my time spent with him.

So very sorry to hear about Paul. It was a privilege to be a former student and band member under his direction. He was an inspiration to scores of students over the years. I have very fond memories of my days when music class was held in the cafeteria, and subsequently, in the portable. Not only did we learn to read music and play instruments, but we left having learned about leadership, teamwork, empathy, and an appreciation for hard work and dedication -- life lessons that we carried with us into our adult lives. I'm sure Paul had no idea of the impact he had on his students, but there is still a group of us who maintain contact over the miles and years that now separate us [on Facebook, search SFDCI 1971-72 Graduation]. My thoughts and prayers go out to Paul's family and friends. Take comfort in knowing that he was an inspiration and friend to many former students.

1,2,3,and 4... and, the band played on. And, he continued to direct band, as I hear it, right up until just a week or so ago.
'Mr. Smith' was my/our band leader/music teach for my last three years of high school, we graduating in 1971... Sad to hear of his passing.
Monday nights were always band practice!
Our various tours and performances took us as far away from home as Cape Brenton, Nova Scotia, and as near as our SFDCI gym, the OLD SFDCI!
Well done, Mr. Smith!
You have influenced so many young lives, well, with instrumental and choral music.
I didn't realize that Paul was just 10 years older than 'us', i.e. 28 we were 18. Surprised.
Thank you, sir, for some of the happiest times I ever experienced in high school!
Patrick, trumpet section.
London, ON
(Peter Crawford, my younger brother, the band's drummer-extrodinaire (no one could forget), has passed in Palm Coast, Florida, on May 7, 2016 at 62 [luekemia]...
He'll be available for your next, new band, forming on the other side, I'm quite sure!)

Mr. Smith was one of my favourite high school teachers. He was kind, patient, and funny.
By his own passion for music, he inspired his students.
He never really criticized you; an arched eyebrow or a rap of his baton was usually the worst you might get for a flubbed note (or in my case, a missed drum riff). But you always knew he believed in you, in all of us.
William Butler Yeats, the great Irish poet, once wrote: “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”
Mr. Smith lit a fire in countless students, by kindling within them a love of music.
We are all lucky to have been warmed by the glow of having him in our lives.

My condolences to Paul’s entire family. He was indeed a kind soul and a solid, constant presence at SFDCI. Many of us have wonderful memories of him and music class and band; he affected us more than we know. I remember auditioning for a very minor part in The Sound of Music and being terrified at the thought of having to sing in front of someone, and a vivid part of that memory is him standing at his music stand, baton poised in the air, giving me a gentle, warm smile and nodding his head to encourage me to proceed. I am sure he will be sorely missed by many.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Paul’s family.
Paul and I shared a true music experience and friendship in life.
The first time I ever knew there was another Paul Smith in town was at the Baptist Church Christmas concert. I was sitting in the front row when the minister looked in my direction and announced that Paul Smith would sing a solo.
I almost fell off my seat not knowing what to do when a tall good looking man stepped forward and sang a beautiful Christmas Carol
I knew Paul as a fishing guide, lover of horses and family, a sax player, my music teacher, colleague and friend.
Any student who had Paul as a teacher will carry found memories of him in their hearts forever.

I often wondered if Mr Smith realized how much of an impact he had on his students. All these years later I still have such clear memories of music class, and band trips to Nova Scotia and Florida, selling oranges and grapefruits for fundraising. And when I hear certain songs on the radio I can hear our band playing along with them. So much happiness he brought to our lives. We were all so very lucky to have had a teacher like him.

With sadness I pass along my condolences and prayers to the Smith family on the loss of Paul, or I always referred to him at SFDCI, Mr. Smith. Although I was never musically inclined and rarely had a reason to venture into the music classroom, that never stopped Mr. Smith from saying hello to me in the hallways. I will always remember him standing with proud authority leading school bands as they performed at highschool plays and concerts. His legacy lives on through the hundreds (or thousands?) of students he shared his lifelong passion of music with.

It is with great sadness of hearing the passing of Mr. Smith. This is particular hard because he was more than just a high school teacher. He was one of the most influential people in my life and so many of my close friend's lives. I had the honour of knowing Mr. Smith way before hitting high school and so when high school came around there was a comfort zone already established. You would often find us just hanging out in the music room because he made it our space. He created a culture that was extremely comfortable to learn and to experience different genres of music. Even today I find myself humming "hootenanny" and my kids often wonder what I am doing! Thank you for giving me that passion. You will be deeply missed.

My condolences to Nancy and the rest of the family members.
"Mr. Smith", as I have always thought of him, was such a positive example that had a real impact on me as I was a student growing up.
Watching his dedication to students and their development through countless hours of music class, band, a band trip to Atlantic Canada, and so many musicals put on at the high school, made clear his dedication, his supportive approach and the impact that he was having.
I had the privilege of singing with him in the First Baptist choir in Smiths Falls for a number of years, and enjoyed his rich contributions there too.
I remember him helping a number of us for quite a while with a fairly tricky part of some music and then, simply adding his infinitely more complicated solo within that piece. It has remained to me an example that I go back to this day when I think of how I want to support others.
My deepest condolences to Nancy and the rest of your family.
