My condolences to the Daniels family, which has suffered a great loss. I met Stephen at various gatherings in the Department of English at the University of Ottawa, where Rosemary has been a committed and popular professor for decades. Stephen was an unfailingly valuable guide and support for her during their rich life together. His range of interests was particularly impressive and, listening to him talk of those closest to him, one quickly realized that family was the most important. He will be sorely missed by them and by the many people whose lives intersected with his.
Fondest regards,
David Rampton

Dear Rosemary,
Saddened to hear this news today. I remember meeting Steve at a dinner in our home. He told us about his service to Canada as a naval architect and engineer. His contribution to those projects is significant.
Despite his ill health, he built a dream home for you, Rosemary, and was able to enjoy living in it with you and the family for several years. Your care and support for him through the last few years have been extraordinary.
Sending you our love and hugs at this difficult time. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need help or comfort. Perhaps, in due course, we can meet again with our colleagues, Breid and Aida.
May Steve rest in peace.

We met Steve and Rosemary in Montreal in 1982 when both Steve and I (Andy) were recruited from the UK to a company competing for a Canadian Navy ship project. The company recruited world-wide so many of us were finding our way together in a new country. Our company soccer team was one of our outlets, and Steve was a strong anchor of it. Vicky was born soon after, and when we were expecting our first baby a year later, Rosemary and Steve were the first friends we turned to for advice.
Our paths parted for a couple of years, but when we had an opportunity to move to Ottawa it was natural to contact Steve and Rosemary for guidance. Settling close to them in Kanata was a natural step and through them we made many new and enduring friendships. Our kids grew up together, and gathering together for many Christmasses helped us create family far from our UK roots. Boating trips (arguing our preferences for sail versus power), card playing nights and our annual cricket match (to the bemusement of Canadian passers by) ensued,
Steve was a rock for us for forty years. His humour, enthusiasm and practical advice added joy to our lives. We miss him.
With love,
Tricia, Andy, Geoff and Martin Carran

For Uncle Steve,
You were such a kind, loving and generous man, loved by everyone who met you.
Even though we were thousands of miles apart I always knew you were there if I needed anything. The countless collections / drop offs to the airport, to providing the most hospitable welcome for myself and Aims into your home, to the many conversations shared over a beer (or two) and glasses of red wine, you really were one in a million.
You were so selfless and would always put other people's needs before your own.
I will miss the chats about football (soccer), I will miss the chats putting the world to rights, but most of all, I will miss you dearly.
You carried an air of humility and grace. People gravitated to that. You will be sorely missed by us and all of those whose lives you graced.
Gone too soon but never forgotten. I will always try to be more like you.
Love from Mark, Aims, William and James x x x
P.S These photos made me smile and cry (great memories that will last forever).

To Steve (Bruv)
To the best ever big brother, you will be sorely missed by me and all the family in the UK.
You were always looking after people especially me, that is why even at an early stage you learnt all those domestic skills, which you used to entertain friends and family throughout your life.
During and after Senior school you were enthusiastic about football, cars, boats and girls not necessarily in that order. The interest in cars was normally out of necessity the words high mileage and rust bucket would describe most of the vehicles.
Your passion for initially powerboats then ships was always high on your agenda, I have fond memories of testing your homemade model powerboat on canoe lake. The ducks and swans certainly needed to be wary!!
You were instrumental in organizing the annual family day out watching the Cowes-Torquay powerboat race, I recall the IOW ferry trip on those happy summer days and cheering on your favourite boat surfury111 from the Cowes promenade.
You moved to Bath after completing your apprenticeship where you met Rosemary and as we say the rest is history. In your life you’ve had many friends, been a loving Son, Husband, Father and Grandfather and the best brother ever, thanks for all the memories.
Love John (Bruv) and Jan

My deepest condolences go out to Steve’s family on the loss of a great man. I have known Steve for over 16 years and had the privilege to have him as my manager for almost 13 years of those while at Fleetway. Steve was an unbelievable mentor and boss. All who worked for him knew they had his support and he looked out for his people. I have always felt extremely fortunate that our careers crossed paths.
I have many good memories from over the years with Steve, the following are a couple of my fondest:
- During the OC Transpo strike in the winter of 2009 Steve was kind enough to allow me to commute back and forth to work with him. Every morning he picked me up and dropped me off at my door every afternoon, all the while refusing to accept any money to contribute to the gas expense. I looked forward every day to our conversations about many topics (very rarely about work, that topic usually stayed in the office), the commute from downtown to Kanata over those weeks always went so quickly.
- On several occasions I had the pleasure to travel with Steve for work. He always made the tasks effortless and fun. After the work day on these trips on the drive back to the hotel we would discuss where we were going to go for dinner that evening. Steve loved his pub food (and visiting some of his favorite spots) but we would always have fun with trying new restaurants and switching it up. We would try to have a different type of food each evening over the trip; Chinese, Indian, Greek, Mexican, even Jamaican one evening. Plus after many of these dinners we would have to find an ice cream parlour to satisfy his sweet tooth. Again the conversation and stories during these trips made me look forward in anticipation to the next one.
As the old saying goes Steve was “a gentleman and a scholar”. He impacted the lives and careers of many people and his impact on the shipbuilding industry in Canada is an incredible legacy. I personally will be eternally grateful for Steve taking me under his wing. Thank you Steve, RIP my friend.

For Steve
I remember when Alex first decided to take me to meet his parents. I was so nervous! With a naval architect for a father and an English professor for a mother, I was so afraid that I wouldn't live up to their expectations.
When I entered their home (in Kanata at the time), all I remember is being greeted by two of the kindest and most welcoming people I had ever met.
Even though Alex and I were dressed in our mad scientist Halloween costumes, looking as ridiculous as two chemists could look, they welcomed me into their home with open arms and open hearts.
Over the years, I remember waiting for the day that I would feel unwelcome like the daughter in-law in a sitcom, but that day never came. With each passing year, I felt more and more like a part of the family. We went to cottages, went out on the boat, went to restaurants, had our Friday night dinners (which turned into Saturday night dinners after the move to Merrickville) at the Daniels house, took trips to small towns and celebrated each and every occasion possible.
Steve was fairly quiet and reserved most of the time and expressed his love for people through actions rather than words, whereas Rosemary would always remind us how much she loved us in as eloquent a way as possible.
The night I really knew that Steve had accepted me as if I was his own daughter was not really a special occasion. It wasn't the night Alex and I told him we were engaged or the day we moved into our first home together. It wasn't even the day we told him we were pregnant. The night I knew, was during a standard Saturday night dinner in Merrickville when we decided to play a family card game of Misère (a Daniels tradition).
Things were getting competitive and Steve was sat next to me and thus my actions in the game would directly affect him. My hand was good and I made an aggressive move and bet more than he had (meaning he could no longer call trump), and he hit me in the arm in frustration. And that's when I knew! So many times I had seen him knudge Alex in the arm when he performed a similar action (which he did VERY often in this game - in fact, he was known for it and would make everyone at the table angry), and I knew that type of razzing was something Steve would only do with family. In that moment, I felt that he truly saw me as family. I razzed him in return of course and from then on, we joked effortlessly whenever the opportunity arose.
Steve was like a dad to me in the 8 years I knew him and I feel so blessed and fortunate to have known him. I was so excited to introduce him to Arthur as grandad and Alex and I are looking forward to having his memory live on in our little family. We're excited to tell Arthur all about his grandad, the amazing times we had together and the incredible man he was.
Love you Steve! You will be missed each and every day.
Natalie

Dearest Natalie! We loved you from the first and that love has only grown stronger through the years. Steve always looked forward to being at your house — he was thrilled to be asked for Thanksgiving dinner! And it was the icing on the cake to have Arthur jumping all over him wanting him to play or read books! You brought a great deal if happiness into Steve’s life (and mine) and I’m so glad you felt that love from him❤️❤️❤️❤️

To Rosemarie, Vicky and Alex,
I am so deeply sorry for your losing Steve. It is still an unbelievable sad shock to me.
I have worked with Steve at MIL Systems for many years and following our different paths we have still maintained connection via emails. We were to meet somewhere on the Rideau Canal this summer and have a beer aboard the boat I finally completed and to celebrate this event; he had kept up to date on the build for a long eight years.
Steve was a friend, a true gentleman and a mentor. Ships and boat design was in his blood and he always took the time to teach me the art versus the science.
At MIL, Steve brought our section together with his visions and sharing many laughs in the process with the guys and gals.
Calm winds and happy sailing my friend. I will have a beer in your honor.

Steve and I go back 52 years to our apprentice days in Portsmouth UK. We both subsequently worked for the Ministry of Defence (Navy) in Bath UK before immigrating to Canada in the 80’s, Steve a few years before me. I have enjoyed a good working relationship with Steve over many years as well as a long friendship. I have many happy memories of Steve, an intelligent, thoughtful and kind man. One of those memories was in New Orleans when we both decided that an afternoon on the Mississippi River drinking beer was a far better idea than a boring trade show.
To Rosemary and family I extend my deepest sympathy, Steve was a well respected colleague, one of the best, he will never be forgotten by those who were privileged to know him.
