Obituary of Stephen Laurence Daniels

Daniels, Stephen Laurence Died peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of his family on February 25, 2022, at the age of 68. Beloved husband of Rosemary Ellen Daniels. Loving father of Victoria Anne Daniels (Joseph Deshane), and Alexander Lawrence Daniels (Natalie Mesnic). Cherished grandfather of Ellie Rosemary Daniels and Arthur Stephen John Daniels. Greatly missed by his step-grandchildren Daton, Aislin, Rylen, and Keelun Deshane. He is also survived by and will be sorely missed by his mother Audrey Daniels, brother John (Jan), sister Corrie, nephews Adam (Kerri) and Mark (Amy) and niece Claire Vara (Jit). Stephen began his career as an apprentice in naval architecture at Portsmouth Royal Naval Dockyard, where he won Apprentice Of The Year award. He was then sponsored by the Royal Corp of Naval Constructors to undertake a degree in naval architecture at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne; he graduated with high honours. Stephen immigrated to Canada in January 1982 to work on the new Canadian Patrol Frigate. In the following 35 years, he worked on the design and maintenance of numerous naval, coast guard and commercial vessels. Stephen was extremely proud of two ships in particular; he headed the design team for the Cape Class (Self-Righting) Lifeboat for the Canadian Coast Guard, which is still in service. Stephen also headed the design team and oversaw the conversion of the Coast Guard vessel, Sir John Franklin, to the research vessel, Amundsen; it undertakes research in the high arctic to this day, and is featured on the current $50.00 bill. Stephen played soccer in various leagues for many years and was also a popular coach of children's soccer at the same time. Steve was happiest when he was out on the water in his beloved boat which he loved sharing with family and friends. Steve was always generous with his time, energy or money and no-one asked him for help in vain. Amongst other charities, he sponsored child through World Vision for the last twenty years. In his final days he was very grateful to Rebecca and Jacquie (Bayshore Nursing), and to Sarah (Nurse Practitioner), who ensured his last few weeks were comfortable and pain free, and who were supportive of the whole family. Thanks are also owed to Dr. Reaume and the oncology team and nurses of the Ottawa Cancer Centre who gave Steve five years of life, for four of which he was able to live an active life beloved by his family and his many friends. Friends are invited to pay their respects on Saturday, March 12, 2022, from 1:00pm till 3:00pm. A memorial service will take place in the Chapel at 3:00pm. Interment will take place in Spring. As expressions of sympathy, donations to Cancer Research Society would be greatly appreciated. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Lannin Funeral Home.
